Formula Car Challenge Mazdas Battle it Out at “Home”

June 10th, 2015
Monterey, CA

This past weekend sixteen FCC competitors entered themselves into the SCCA double header race event at the world renowned Mazda Raceway. Usually, the FCC racers have exclusive racing with only their three classes. This weekend however was a very unique event where FCC racers would be joined by a variety of open wheel cars, and a few sports-racers.

"We feel that giving our racers the chance to race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and to compete inside an even larger group of cars is a great opportunity for them," noted Series Official Jeff Loge. "Changing venues, and increasing challenges is a great way to accumulate experience in racing. This type of training is exactly why many of our alumni have gone on to be so successful. The San Francisco Region SCCA was kind enough to give us a split start, which was great as the total field was close to thirty cars!”

Round 5 Pole Positions

  • Formula Mazda: Bill Weaver
  • FormulaSPEED: Michael Avansino
  • Pro Formula Mazda: Cabot Bigham

At the drop of the green Bigham, Pickett, and Conwright were nose to tail. Robin Shute and Nicholas Woodman were also challenging for a spot on the podium in the early stages. Bigham held onto the lead, and took the win in the Pro FM class. There was a lot of action in the Formula Mazda class as well. Weaver took an early lead, but had to avoid a spinning car in turn 11. This gave Tazio Ottis, and Brad Drew enough room to sneak by Weaver. After a great battle, Ottis took the top step on the podium in the FM class. Michael Avansino rounded out the winners for Round 5 as he took his 3rd win of the season in the FormulaSPEED class.

Qualifying for Round 6 took place only a couple of hours before the race was scheduled to begin on Sunday. Saturday's race winners, who were obviously still on their game, set the pole times in their respective classes.

  • Pro Formula Mazda: Cabot Bigham

Round Six started off with a bang as Pro FM racer Jaden Conwright got into the back of another competitor, and had to pit for a nose change. Cabot controlled the PFM race from early on, but Hunter Pickett kept him in his sights. There were a few more incidents, and spins during the race but the leaders kept out of trouble and at the checkered flag Weaver, Bigham, and Avansino took home the class wins
